Because of her passion for
social and political issues and events, actress and model Somy
Ali decided to expand her career to include writing and journalism.
In November 1999, she moved to the United States and she received
a Bachelor's degree in psychology which she finished in three
years. Following that she pursued a Masters degree in print journalism
at the University of Miami.
While attending the University of
Miami, Somy developed an interest in documentary films,
therefore left UM in 2003 to attend the New York Film Academy.
She obtained a degree in film making, direction, script writing,
and editing.
Some of her first projects included short films on Abortion, Domestic Violence, and Teenage suicide.
For the past year, Somy has been involved with women's rights issues in South Asia. She is working towards bringing the plight of rape and domestic violence victims to media's attention. An active member of the Asian-Ameircan Network Against Abuse of Women (ANAA) Somy has written articles about Dr. Shazia Khalid, Sonia Naz, and Mukhtaran Mai. All of these women are victims of rape and have fought and are still fighting for justice in Pakistan. "My goal is to help all of these women and make sure that every girl/woman in my country and universally is able to obtain an education and has her basic human rights," says Somy.
Originally from Karachi, Pakistan, actress and Model,
Somy Ali moved to Bombay, India where she worked in
10 Hindi films and several commercials.
Somy now works as a model, freelance journalist, and a documentary film maker in the United States.
